Driftwood sculpture featuring found fishing line

We have many hanging pieces around the house a memory from our previous rental that had great open beams.

This small hanging wooden piece features drift wood from a private beach ,glass beads from one of the many stores on Homer Spit road and found fishing line.

Abandoned fishing line is a huge problem in Alaska. Everywhere we went on beaches we found discarded lines. The beach in Homer also had the biggest number of dead birds I have come across. So I brought some home to make pieces to high-light this issue.

We recently went for an evening stroll at our local lake and found containers to encourage people to dispose of fishing line and hooks.A single but effective box seemed to solve the problem.

By the way sketching

WP_20160704_11_31_19_ProSince I have been journaling as we travel I have found new favorite techniques.I like to create small 6×4 watercolor books. This trip I took a small book of strathmore postcards. We have many supplies hanging around the house but I like to “borrow” hubby’s newton watercolors that he took to Nepal. He also has a nice set of water soluble graphite pencils which I have completely fallen for.I think my fav piece is this image for the hills above Seward-completed at a picnic table in front of the van.

Georgetown Steam Plant

An arty friend gave me a heads up to this little treasure just at the bottom of the runaway of Boeing field. Georgetown steam plant provided power for Seattle’s early tram system. This area is not always great at retaining old historical buildings but this one has found a place  in the hearts of engineers and believe it or not filmmakers. It’s only open once a month to the public but is well worth the visit. www.seattle.gov/light/georgetownsteamplant/ has details.

I’m a Steampunk freak and so I just fell in love with the dial and this old elevator.Images will be included in a future Steampunk pieces.

Summer 2016 and beach adventures

Yes it has arrived and around me it has been a beautiful spring. I’ve been making memories with a family visit. My parents have been on vacation meaning lots of personal time and no blogging.I have lots of snippets to share. We ventured to the coast and the mountains,To show opening and completed pieces in my own studio.I joined my first swap in a couple of years and just generally have fun and hung out.We discover a new local museum and had an unusual beach find.

WP_20160522_14_45_04_Pro (2)We visited La Push and stayed at Quileute Oceanside resort.A beautiful spot while walking the beach we found this piece below the tide line. The following morning we took the piece to the elders for identification and to be sent to the school as a teaching aid. We’re still waiting for identification. We were really curious as to what it could be.

More Owls

We have had a great week in the PNW. The weather continues to be good warm and dry.On Monday we headed out to Ebey’s landing on Whidbey Island a nice short drive and ferry hop from our Bellevue home.We spent the day hang out with Northern Harriers and short earred owls at dusk. The little strip of land by the Port Townsend ferry is a fav spot.

Hubby commented while taking his beach side required nap that I would normally be journallng but I realized i had just hadn’t done that in a while so this week when I came across a 21 day challenge I felt it was time to flex those muscles.

This is Day One have to confess I did a little sketching first. Thought about which of my 4 current journals to pick up and in the end went for The First Deadly Sin.I like the text pages and as I’m finding it difficulty  starting  projects currently an already washed page was helpful.

Owl watching

Today we headed out in warm weather to look for the owls at Nisqually. It was a beautiful spring day.I was glad of my Seahawks hat, gloves and down jacket. We had long looks a female owl tucked into the hollow of a snag. She rested ,wriggled and stretched until she finally settled down to rest. We’re unable to find the owlets on this visit but there is always next time.We heard the first rufus hummingbird of the season around the just flowering salmonberry. It felt like spring but the long term weather forecast is not to positive.

Breaking all the rules

I love basketry and while this image breaks a few rules I will be spending many happy hours talking about these pieces over the coming months.John Garrett is a new artist to me but I love his work. All those pieces of ephemera- just yummy.Lisa Telford’s Moon Warrior is a personal favorite. She reminds me why I invest the hours of research to be a docent to share inspirational pieces to create new stories of my own.Baskets

Garden of Artful Delights

I spent last week volunteering and docenting a Ginny Ruffner inspired garden at the Pacific North West Garden show. The garden was created by the Arboretum Washington foundation.I got to work with Bob,Phil and Rhonda the designers over the week and indeed it really did take a village to pull it off.Ginny visited for the installation of the glass and I learned some new techniques.

It was very busy and fun.I learnt to wire glass, how a show garden is constructed.I helped Phil install part of the garden while ducking hanging glass pieces.I learnt a lot about bog gardens in Canada.

We have new shrubs, bulbs and trees for the yard,a large metal heart which is just below my studio window at the base of a cedar tree. Most treasure of all is the pond liner which will be installed in our garden ,maybe one day we will grow dragonflies here.Handy work

Superbowl Sunday Go Hawks

12th ManI’ve watched American football since the ’80’s when it was first screen on Channel 4.The passion Washingtonians have for their team is quite amazing. We  were downtown the night before the semis and you really could feel the excitement in the air.

The whole place was 12th man obsessed but I think this little yard was my fav expression.

We found Edison.A very cute little town excellent breakfast at the converted gas station.Everything else was closed as it was Superbowl Sunday and everyone had Seahawk’s fever ! I’m looking forward to returning when the stores are open.We need an owl jug !
